Biography

Roman Serdar Mendle manages the Smart Cities Program at the ICLEI and heads ICLEI’s work on City-Business Collaboration. Mr. Mendle and his team enable the 1500 cities in the ICLEI Network to navigate the smart cities space and help them find and evaluate solutions to sustainability challenges. He also manages the Urban Transitions Alliance, supporting industrial and post-industrial cities to transition towards sustainability and a local green economy, decoupled from emissions and resource use.

A Sustainability Scientist by training, Mr. Mendle has expert knowledge on cities’ needs and barriers for successful sustainability transitions of their complex and interconnected urban systems. Roman Mendle holds an MSc in Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science from Lund University, a BA in Economics and Politics of East Asia and a certificate in Energy Economics and Mining from Ruhr-University Bochum, as well as a certificate in Foreign Studies from Renmin University, Beijing.
